Julie has continued her education through life-writing workshops, courses
and conferences. She helped organized many of these events through her roles as program chair for the 2006 Association of Personal Historians conference and Northwest regional co-coordinator for the Association of Personal Historians.

newspaper less than 30,000, “Portraits of a Disaster,”
vignettes describing how Centralia’s 1990 flood affected people

Second place, Society of Professional Journalists, 1990, Government
reporting, daily newspapers 16,000 to 50,000 circulation, for a series
evaluating the job performances of 10 elected county officials

Third place, Society of Professional Journalists, 1990, Consumer
reporting, daily newspapers 16,000 to 50,000 circulation, for a story
detailing the euthanization process at the local animal shelter

Third place, Washington Press Association, 1990 Special series,
“Report Cards Size Up Elected County Officials,” a series
evaluating the job performances of 10 elected county officials

Initiated and helped lead coverage of an award-winning series on
the plight of the working poor entitled “Paycheck to Paycheck,”
which won first place in the C.B. Blethen Memorial Award for enterprise
reporting in 1992

Helped lead coverage and edit stories about a train collision at
Kelso, winner of first place in the C.B. Blethen Memorial Award for
deadline reporting in 1993

Assisted in leading coverage and editing stories about overcrowding
at the county jail and a bond request for a new jail. The series won
second place in the C.B. Blethen Memorial Award for comprehensive
coverage in 1998

Helped organize, write and edit stories for “Our Town at 75,”
an anniversary section for The Daily News, which won first place in
special sections from the Washington Press Association in 1998
